I stayed 4 nights at the Northern Greenhouse in Cairns.This place has won the award for best hostel 3 years in a row and no doubt as to why. First, let me say that most rooms are 6 share dorms, however you can also stay in a private studio apartment with either one king or two twin beds. I stayed in one of these studios.The hostel was clean and well located, on Grafton street not far from the main strip to get down to the beach. Beach was a 10 min walk maximum. Grocery stores and shopping mall are nearby (<10 min by foot). The front desk is manned 24 hours. This is rare in hostels and was very handy considering my 11pm arrival. There is a large kitchen that is pretty clean and was used by many of the guests to cook their own meals. I believe the wifi is free, and if you don't have your own laptop, there are two desktop computers that you can use free of charge. The Lounge area has a pool table and nice couches. They have one free daily activity, such as sailing, trip to the waterfall, etc. There is also a swimming pool available for use. I did not use it as I went down to the esplanade by the beach but it looked clean and others were swimming there.There is a travel desk, but I didn't book anything there so cannot comment. The front desk staff was helpful, making some calls for me after my flight was cancelled, even though I had already checked out. I would definitely stay here again.Stayed April 2011, traveled solo
Excellent hostel near the bus transit center, the place is very nice, the rooms are very large and clean and have the kitchen. The common room is very spacious and well kept. Breakfast is FREE and if you have a laptop the wireless is FREE. I recommend strongly, is a very quiet hostel there aren't parties every night like in other places, but you can still go out and go and look elsewhere ...Stayed June 2010, traveled with friends
The hostel is located right in the center of Cairns, a few blocks from popular bars and restaurants. The staff is friendly and helpful; they run weekly trips to local waterfalls and have weekly barbeques on Sundays (both free). The rooms are clean and well organized. Every room has a bathroom ensuite as well as a sink and fridge. Definitely the best experience I've had with a hostel.Stayed April 2010, traveled solo
